The results of the Stevens Alumni Association Class of 2020 Officers election were announced, with Luke Langner to serve as President, Ryan Tom as Vice President, Jacob Schozer as Fund Captain, and Alexander Murtagh as Secretary. The Stute recently had the chance to ask them a few questions about their goals and responsibilities in their new positions, as well as find out about their time here at Stevens.
Luke Langner is the President of Pi Tau Sigma, the Mechanical Engineering Honor Society, Vice President of Member Development in his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, a brother of Alpha Phi Omega, and a member of the Order of Omega. Langner is also involved in an impressive 16 additional organizations and programs, far too many to list here. He’s even held three on-campus jobs, including Attila the Duck!
Langner’s main role as President is “to take lead in setting objectives for our class.” He is responsible for partnering with the Alumni Office to organize a Reunion Committee for the Class of 2020, “to ensure that we can make our class reunions successful.” Luke stated, “We’ve still got a bit to go before we’re up and running,” but he remains optimistic. “I have no doubt that my fellow officers and I will be able to work through these circumstances for the betterment of our class.”
Ryan Tom has held the positions in the Student Government Association of Senator, Speaker, and Vice-President of Operations. He is a brother of Sigma Phi Epsilon, in which he assists with recruitment, brotherhood events, and their Balanced Man scholarship. He founded a chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers, where he previously served as Treasurer. He is a Peer Leader and a Pre-College Program RA, and is a member of the Student Managed Investment Fund, Club Ski Team, and Stevens Venture Center.
Tom’s position as Vice President is to “support the president and rest of the officers in any way possible to ensure their efforts are successful.” His biggest goal in this position is to “encourage our class to stay involved […] and maintain a relationship with current undergrads.” He states, “I’ve seen just how much of an impact relationships with alumni who are pursuing careers that align with your interests can have on your success, so I want to foster as much connection between all Stevens alumni and students as possible.”
You may remember Jake Schozer from his many years of running calculus reviews on behalf of his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, where he served as Chapter President in 2019. Schozer was also an E-Board member of the Interfraternity Council in 2017 and 2018, serving as Recruitment Chair and Vice President of Programming, respectively. For the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years, he served as the President of the Planning Committee for the Pinnacle Scholars program. He was also involved with the Club Rock Climbing team and StevensTHON, and worked as a peer tutor and a tour guide.
Schozer, as Fund Captain, has the responsibility of helping the Alumni Office to “coordinate the fundraising efforts” for the Class of 2020. “Fundraising, especially from recently graduated college students who are dealing with loans, finding apartments, and beginning a new life is not an easy task,” Schozer admits. Because of this, his goal is to “[establish] a culture of giving” so that later, when young alumni are more financially stable, they will be accustomed to giving, and will be more likely to donate more often or in greater amounts.
Alex Murtagh is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and a member of the Order of Omega. He is the founder and President of the Martial Arts and Self Defense Club and President of Stevens’ chapter of Chi Epsilon, the Civil Engineering Honor Society. He also served as the Outreach Chair of The Stute, in addition to contributing as a news writer and columnist.
Murtagh’s responsibility as Secretary is “to reach out to the Class of 2020 and send the Alumni Office and The Indicator (our alumni magazine) any interesting news from our class post-graduation.” His goal is to keep the Class of 2020 engaged with Stevens, and to “stay involved as alumni.”
If you’re graduating in the Class of 2020, you can expect to hear from these four officers going forward as alumni. You can expect to hear from them for matters relating to fundraising, class reunions, and ongoing communication, so keep an eye on your inboxes!
