Coronavirus has not stopped the mermaids from swimming to campus. On April 5th, the founding class, “The Menente Line” of Lambda Tau Omega was announced on Instagram. The two founding sisters are Jocelyn Julaj and Shania Taylor.
“We saw sisters of Lambda Tau Omega at the CGC Showcase, which initiated our interest,” said Julaj, president of the colony at Stevens. Afterwards, they kept in contact with the sorority’s expansion director until they were able to bring the organization to campus this semester.
“LTO made us feel welcomed and comfortable with who we are. Every womyn that we talked to spoke with confidence and passion that truly inspired us,” said Julaj on why they decided to bring the organization, “Despite everyone’s differences, they held a special and amazing bond that made us want to be a part of their organization.”
As an organization, Julaj hopes to educate the Stevens and Hoboken community on multiculturalism, inspire strong women, and become more involved in the Welfare of Children. “Overall, we want to create a home in which women of all shapes and colors can feel welcomed and empowered together,” said Julaj. Lambda Tau Omega is currently the only organization founded on the principle of multiculturalism to have a presence on Stevens’ campus.
Lambda Tau Omega is not the only new Greek organization on campus. Lambda Sigma Upsilon, a Latino fraternity, is currently recruiting for their founding class.
Anyone interested in joining Lambda Tau Omega should reach out to one of its members, email them at stevens.colony@lambdatauomega.org, message their Instagram account @StevensMermaids, or attend one of their future virtual events.
