On March 5, Provost Christophe Pierre announced a future change to the academic break period. Currently, academic break is 3β5 p.m. every Wednesday, giving students two hours without classes to attend events or relax. The conversation of modifying academic break has been going on for years, as referenced in a past article from The Stute.
In past years, academic break was held on Mondays 4β6 p.m. and Wednesdays 1β6 p.m. In January of 2018, it was announced that both breaks would be replaced by a single break β the current break on Wednesdays.
Starting in the Fall 2020 semester, academic break will be extended by one hour, resulting in a three-hour break Wednesdays 3β6 p.m. Anthony Tesori, the Student Government Association’s Vice President of Academic Affairs, explained that the extension has been on hold due to the opening of the Gateway Academic Center. The opening of the new buildings has enabled the creation of more class sections, which ultimately made extending academic break easier than before.
The extension will prove beneficial for many students and student organizations who make use of the academic break to both go to events and host them. Tesori notes that many students complained about events frequently being held at 9 p.m. Extending academic break is a way to avoid later event times.
As Provost Christophe Pierre explained, the academic break extension aims to aid students in managing their study schedules and to participate in extracurricular activities.
