On February 26, 2020, the Black Student Union held “Wonder Womxn” in Babbio Atrium, the second ever held on Stevens campus. The event was originally pitched as a pop-up exhibit for womxn of color. An art gallery composed entirely of art created by womxn of color, performances by Stevens womxn of color, and presentations by various multicultural sororities from around the area were some key highlights. The DJ, Julian Hernandez, kept the night upbeat while playing music solely from womxn of color. Founder DuJuan Kirk described the event as the perfect way to “pop out of Black History month and into Woman’s History Month.” This is because DuJuan thinks it important to highlight multicultural sororities to give them a platform to show the community, empowerment, and they have to offer. The sororities in attendance were Zeta Phi Beta (ZPB), Chi Upsilon Sigma (CUS), Lambda Tau Omega (LTO), Omega Phi Chi (OPC), and Omega Phi Beta (OPB). The night began with a warm welcome from hosts Christina Puntiel and Zharee Richards. The first act was from Stevens student Megha Vadehra of Sigma Delta Tau who did an exciting tap dance to an Amy Winehouse song. After that, the sororities performed, in founding order, various steps and strolls.
The Stute got the chance to speak with some of the sororities in attendance about their thoughts on womxn empowerment and their places in their sorority. A womxn in LTO stated, “It empowers and encourages me to be my true self. Because we’re a multicultural sorority, we push womxn to not be cookie cutter and not into a mold for media and societal standards to act, be, and look a certain way.” A sister from OPB stated that their sisterhood allows them “to be humble while still knowing their worth.” An OPC womxn stated that their sisterhood “promotes academic wellness, community affairs, and diversity.”
In the coming years, the Black Student Union hopes to grow this event, with more sororities, performances, and art! Huge shoutout to collaborators FAST, LAA, D&I, Diversity Education, Lore-El Program, Omega Phi Beta, and Sigma Psi Zeta.
