The Student Government Association (SGA) formed the Campus Wellness Committee (CWC) this past Sunday, merging the Campus Life Committee (CLC) and the Health and Wellness Committee (H&W). The new committee will work towards many of the goals of the old committees, which primarily involved improving life on campus in a broad sense.
In previous semesters, CLC and H&W had many overlapping goals. Both aimed to improve life at Stevens, with CLC focusing on the physical campus environment, and H&W working more on student health services.
According to the resolution to merge the two committees, Resolution S-20S-002, CLC aimed to “ensure the demands of the student body are represented in all non-academic facets which directly affect the quality of life on campus,” while H&W was made to “represent the needs and concerns of the Stevens student body in regards to their mental, physical, and sexual wellbeing.”
As of this resolution, both committees have been merged into CWC, which will take on the roles of both. According to the resolution, the new committee will “represent the needs of the student body in all mental, physical and sexual health needs, as well as in all non-academic facets which directly affect the quality of life on campus. This includes, but is not limited to, the residence life of the student body, conditions for commuter students, and the dining services on campus.”
The merge should also make it easier for senators to pursue different initiatives around campus, since they can focus on one committee instead of working on two to achieve the same goals.
According to SGA Vice President of Operations Adrian Castellanos, “We hope that by creating the campus wellness committee and replacing the campus life and health and wellness committees we can better tackle the issues that impact us all on campus. In recent months the health and wellness and campus life committees initiatives were intertwined but the two committees still functioned separately. Our hope is to improve the efficiency of initiatives that go through the committee.”
The new committee will work on both old and new initiatives in order to improve conditions on campus and will retain its members from the previous committees. CWC still needs a committee chair, but one should be appointed on Sunday. According to Castellanos, “Sam [Molla] and I will be doing our best to ensure that this committee can hit the ground running and accomplish as much as it can during our turn and beyond.”
