The Student Government Association (SGA) recently began the process of electing new senators for several empty positions.
Historically, the SGA has had a difficult time filling empty senator seats, particularly among upperclassmen. The Stute reported in February 2019 that 21 seats were vacant at that time.
As a result of the empty positions, the SGA plans to hold a series of vacancy elections. According to SGA Secretary Andrea Diaz-Gonzalez, “there will be three vacancy elections for the senate. One is currently in the process and was announced on the SGA Instagram account.”
“To get students involved this semester we are hosting events like Meet the SGA and Cookies with the Cabinet in order to have better conversations between us and the student body,” she continued. Diaz-Gonzalez hopes that these programs will increase participation in the SGA and lead to fewer vacancies.
The Senate currently has 10 freshman senators, 6 sophomores, 5 juniors, and 2 seniors. Nominations for the positions lasted from January 29 to January 30 and were geared towards sophomores, juniors, and seniors in order to try to maintain a balance among the groups of representatives.
Currently running for the Senate are three sophomore candidates: Angelina Mauriello, Elina Vidal, and Danielle Ragan, as well as seniors Alex Reina and Elena Malova, who have both served as senators and cabinet members in previous semesters.
As there will be more vacancy elections later in the semester, anyone interested in running for the position should keep an eye on the SGA Instagram (@stevens_sga) and on the SGA DuckLink page.
