On Sunday, October 27, Stevens hosted its annual Out of Darkness Walk in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Stevens students, faculty, and Hoboken residents showed up to support the cause. Although it was raining during the walk, a large group of participants still showed up in support. One of the participants, Kendall Niles Peretz, a sophomore student here at Stevens, said, “Over $38,000 was raised and more than 200 people walked in this year despite torrential rain. It was an amazingly impactful experience to get to see firsthand how deeply personal the issue of mental health is for so many people in the community.”
AFSP has set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate by 20% by 2025. In addition to this goal, the money raised goes to support new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss. According to the AFSP website, the walk in Hoboken raised a total of $38,253, surpassing their goal of $36,000. The organization works to raise millions of dollars every year to continue their work.
