On October 23, WISO (West Indian Student Organization) hosted their first ever folklore night event. Folklore night celebrates the oral tradition of storytelling popular in the West Indies. At the event, students gathered together and told Halloween-themed folklore stories that had been passed down over the generations. Each folklore story changes from person to person who tells it. One story told was about the baccoo, a demon trapped in a corked bottle. When released, the baccoo possesses its owner, making them go insane. President Alina Chen said, “It was fun to gather everyone together and to tell spooky stories. People learned more about the West Indies in a different way and we all enjoyed seeing people get dressed up for the part.” Forty people attended the event. Curry chicken, chow mein, dhalpuri, and mithai were served.
