Twelve undergraduate and nine graduate business students were inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma last Monday, March 11, 2019. Beta Gamma Sigma is an international honor society for business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). This was the third induction ceremony hosted by the Stevens chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma.
The inducted undergraduate students were Kyle Bowes, Georgia
Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is limited to individuals who have completed at least half of their required coursework and are in the top 10% of their undergraduate class or the top 20% of their graduate class. According to Rothschild, the GPA requirement is typically above
Chapters of Beta Gamma Sigma are limited to business schools that are accredited by the AACSB. Less than 5% of business schools worldwide are accredited by the AACSB.
“One of the first benefits is that there are well over 200,000 active members,” said Rothschild. Members of Beta Gamma Sigma are able to attend conferences and network with members from other chapters. Additionally, students can join an alumni chapter. These chapters bring in guest speakers and host networking events. “Our students have the double advantage. There is an alumni group in Jersey and an alumni group in New York City. They can become a part of both,” said Rothschild.
At Stevens, Beta Gamma Sigma is fairly new, having existed since the 2015-2016 academic year. The current e-board of Beta Gamma Sigma is trying to grow the presence of the organization. “We’re trying to grow the name,” said Michael Patti, Vice President of Student Development.
In the past, Beta Gamma Sigma has hosted a program called “Making Cents,” in which members of Beta Gamma Sigma worked with Hoboken High School students to help teach financial literacy. Last semester, Beta Gamma Sigma hosted an internship panel, which allowed students to ask questions about obtaining an internship, including interview help and resume guidance. Near finals this semester, the organization plans to host Bagels with BGS. At the event, students will be able to relax and enjoy a bagel while speaking to someone from Beta Gamma Sigma. “We want to make our presence known on campus,” said Michael Patti, Vice President of Student Development.
In the future, Patti hopes that Beta Gamma Sigma becomes an established name on campus and that students will strive to join the honor society. “We really want to see people trying to push and once they’re in, really growing and teaching future students to be [at] the highest professional standard,” said Patti.
Anyone interested in Beta Gamma Sigma, even if they are not a business major, are welcome to reach out to the organization.
