Stevens’ Black Students Union (BSU), in collaboration with Residential Dining Services (RDS), put on a celebration in Pierce Dining Hall for Black History Month on February 21, 2019. At the event, students were able to experience different facets of Black culture, specifically performance and dance.
BSU hired a performance group called Batingua Arts, a Brooklyn-based multicultural performing arts company. According to the Batingua Arts website, their focus is “expressing a variety of Afro-Caribbean rooted art forms such as; modern, jazz, capoeira, acrobatics, hip hop, samba, salsa, reggae, soca, spoken word and many more.” Additionally, sisters of Omega Phi Beta Sorority performed to support.
“I want people to realize how influential black history/culture is to pop culture,” explained DuJuan Kirk, President of BSU. In celebration of Black History Month, BSU has hosted several events, including a soca rhythm dance class, and movie screenings. “Up next we have a pop up exhibit honoring women of color, discussion circle around controversy in politics and culture, a GBM to honor black history month, and our ‘Week of Melanin’ spirit week.” A poster of BSU events is provided below!
