Stevens’ Chinese Student Association hosted its very first Dragon Boat Festival on Tuesday, November 13 in Babbio Atrium. Traditionally celebrated in the summer, the Dragon Boat Festival commemorates fealty and filial piety in China. The festival “is usually an outdoor boat race held in the summer when it’s warmer,” according to CSA member Caitlin Uang.
At the event, students could make boats using tin foil and race them down canals prepared by CSA. To move the boats, students used straws to blow air, and the three fastest boats could win prizes, such as Gudetama, lucky cat, and candies.
As for food, they had the usual noodles, spring rolls, and pepper beef. In addition, they had zongzi (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves) and sesame balls, which are eaten during the festival. “We hope to do this again next year, but earlier in the semester when the weather is warmer,” added Uang.
