Stevens Institute of Technology is in collaboration with Liberty Science Center (LSC) to help advance SciTech Scity. According to the SciTech Scity website, “SciTech Scity is a curated community of tech entrepreneurs, scientists, students, and other forward-thinking people and organizations working together to create a better future for all.” The SciTech Scity project, described as a “mini-city,” is an initiative to create a technology ecosystem adjacent to LSC that contains space for technology, related businesses, R&D space, incubator space, and housing. It’s mainly designed around the science and technology theme.
The 16-acre lot, near LSC, currently looks, “like Breaking Bad was filmed there,” according to Daniel Lafuente of LSC. SciTech Scity will be located along Phillip Street near Jersey City Boulevard. The campus will contain a K-12 school, a research and workspace facility, and a residential community. “The whole purpose is to try to create this mini-city where people are working and learning and living and playing,” said Lafuente. As of right now, the goal is to open in 2020/2021.
Details of the exact relationship between Stevens and SciTech are still being discussed. According to an email sent by Nathalie Waite Brown, the Director of Graduate Student Affairs, “the Liberty Science Center is exploring the initial STEM graduate and Ph.D. student interest in living in purpose-built graduate student housing at ‘SciTech Scity.'” Graduate Student Affairs hosted focus groups to gather information on students’ perspectives about housing on Oct. 3. The current living situation, housing preferences, and priorities were all discussed at the meetings.
More details about Stevens’ involvement should be announced in the future.
