This year will mark Professor Brian Borowski’s fifth year of teaching at Stevens. Borowski has enjoyed every moment of his time at Stevens, and he was once a student himself back in 2004.
Prior to teaching Computer Science classes, Borowski worked as a technical specialist at Thomson Reuters in New York City and as a software engineer at Prudential, KPMG, and Syncsort. Commonly known as “Dr. B” by most students who address him, Borowski said, “I want to share my knowledge with the younger generation so that Stevens students can go out into the world and make a difference. Stevens students are great — inquisitive, attentive to detail, and entrepreneurial.”
Besides being a Computer Science professor, he’s passionate about music and is the Director of Music at St. Bonaventure Church in Paterson. He has played the organ for weekend masses since he was 12 years old, and also sings and directs the choir. He also enjoys having great conversations and meals with fellow colleagues, friends, and students.
When in New York City, you can find Borowski at one of the many museums or skyscrapers taking photographs.
He shares one word of advice to the incoming freshman class: “Don’t underestimate the workload. Keep a good balance between work and play.”
Specifically for Computer Science students, he said, “Programming is not a spectator sport. Students will learn better by trying to solve problems and code solutions on their own [rather] than by watching someone else do it. Learning takes place while making attempts, and often a small amount of coaching will get a student back on track.”
