The Ethnic Student Council (ESC) hosted its annual Unity Carnival on Palmer Lawn this past Wednesday, only two days before one of its largest events of the semester: the Unity Showcase. Unlike the Unity Showcase, the Unity Carnival doesn’t have any large-scale performances; it’s an event offering foods from various ESC student organizations on campus with short previews of the performances in the Unity Showcase.
“[Unity Carnival] serve[s] as an event to hype people up for the Unity Showcase on Friday,” said Aditya Bhalla, Publicity Chair of the ESC. “Unity [Showcase] is always perceived as a big competition between all the RSOs, so the carnival is a great way to step away from the competitive nature of Unity and enjoy all the culture the Ethnic RSOs bring to campus.”
Undergraduate students had to receive a “passport” before they could be served food. Before an ESC student organization could offer food, they had to mark the passport, indicating that the student has visited the respective organization. Most students had the passport completely marked after visiting the Unity Carnival.
The wide selection of food — such as the Chinese Student Association serving pork dumplings and the Latin American Association serving “Bebida de Mango” drinks — represented the unique cultures of the serving organizations. Most of these ESC organizations will participate in the Unity Showcase on Friday. Some ESC organizations, however, such as the Stevens Italian Club, served food yet won’t be participating in the Unity Showcase. “We’re very happy to be participating in the Unity Carnival, especially since [our organization] just restarted,” said Ian Blakeslee, the ESC representative of the Stevens Italian Club. “We hope to participate in the showcase next year.”
The Unity Showcase will be at 7 p.m. on Friday in Caravan Arena.
