On Tuesday, March 22, members of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) networked with Stevens alumni who work in the biomedical engineering industry while enjoying traditional Irish food.
Hosted in Jacobus Lounge, the event allowed club members to cycle between tables where they could talk to alumni, and members of the club were encouraged to ask questions. Topics upon which questions were based included what the alum do at their job, advice for a Stevens student, and how to get an internship in the industry. Alumni represented numerous biomedical engineering companies, including Getinge, Stryker, Becton Dickinson, and Arthrex.
“These alumni really want to help you. The biomedical industry is very small, so you should take any chance to build a new professional relationship,” said Matthew Kandl, president of BMES, who sent a follow-up email to all attendees giving networking tips. Each alumnus in attendance was given a small gift from the Stevens Alumni Office. “This is the third alumni event of this type we have done, and it was our most successful,” said Kandl.
Aside from networking, members of BMES were able to enjoy Irish and comfort food in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, including mac and cheese, potato pancakes, mashed potatoes, chicken, veggies, and dessert.
Members of BMES found the event useful. Fariha Choudhury, a 5/5 BME, stated, “Well, for me, this event was beneficial because it provided me with the different opportunities available to people graduating with Biomedical Engineering degrees. As a biomedical engineer, it’s often difficult to navigate what jobs can be offered to a person with a Biomedical Engineering degree because biomedical engineers often feel that their options are limited in the career field.” Twenty members of BMES attended the event.
BMES’s next event is CPR and First Aid Training on March 28 at 1 p.m. in Pierce 116.
