So, I want to take a moment to discuss the phenomenon that is sports. This is unlike me because, for those of you who don’t know me, I don’t follow sports at all. Yet, I found myself watching a good majority of the Super Bowl this past Sunday. Now, this wasn’t because it’s my idea of a fun Sunday night (although even I have to admit it was a good game and, personally, I enjoy the commercials). It was because of the group of people.
Sports bring people together, even people with different interests and people who support different teams. The group of friends I was watching the Super Bowl with consisted of avid football fans, people who were just there for the food, and fans of opposing teams. Despite the differences present, there was no hostility towards each other. Yes, the Patriots fan from Boston was upset and wasn’t in the mood to talk, but there was still laughter between fans of both teams.
This is the great thing about sports. I’m looking forward to the opening of the Olympic games this Friday. I can’t wait till the entire Earth is brought together to watch the Olympics. If you think about it, it’s kind of crazy and amazing all at the same time.
So hopefully, I leave you with some amusement at this thought, and that you are inspired to watch the games with people you wouldn’t normally see. Perhaps you’ll discuss a certain sport with someone with whom you think you have nothing in common. Challenge yourself and let the magic of sports do its work, as it brings people together.
