Within the month, construction of the North Building is expected to begin. The building, which is being constructed by ModSpace Corporation, will provide new academic and classroom space for the Stevens community. Work on the project is expected to continue until May of next year, with the building expected to be open to students and faculty for use as of the summer of 2017.
The North Building is primarily intended to serve as a replacement for classroom space that will be unavailable as the Lieb Building is taken down in order to be replaced by the Academic Gateway Complex. The building will be located near Humphreys and Jonas Halls, precisely where the North Parking Lot is currently situated.
After Stevens received approval from the Hoboken Zoning Board for construction of the Academic Gateway Complex, a building that is intended to serve as a home for the Computer Science department as well as provide space for new laboratories and other facilities, the issue arose of providing classroom and office space for departments displaced by the project. The North Building will solve this issue by temporarily providing existing departments with space that will temporarily be unavailable due to the construction of the Academic Gateway Complex, which is expected to be completed towards the end of 2019.
As a result of the construction of the North Building, the North Parking lot will be permanently closed, and the Alexander Parking lot will experience partial closures at different times throughout the construction process. Additionally, the sidewalk between Humphreys Hall and the North Parking Lot will be closed during the entirety of the construction process.
Members of the Stevens Community who have questions regarding the project are encouraged to contact Richard Snyder, Senior Project Manager and member of the Division of Facilities and Campus Operations, at richard.snyder@stevens.edu.
