Over 80 students participate in a game of Irish Skittles hosted by Stevens Irish Association, and winners received Skittles candy as a prize. Other snacks were given out to participants such as Halloween pretzels, soda, chocolate, and chips.
Irish Skittles is a traditional Irish lawn game which is similar to bowling. Pieces of wood, with point values of one, two, three, and four, are arranged on a circle drawn on the ground. A piece of wood representing ten points is placed in the center. The objective is to toss a block of wood at the setup and earn as many points as possible in four throws. Points are accumulated by adding up all of the point values on blocks that have been knocked completely outside of the circle.
“In SIA, our main goal is to spread awareness about Irish culture, and the way we’ve been most successful in doing that is by making sure all of our participants have fun while they’re learning,” said SIA club executive board member Ellen Drennan. “We want to educate people about our culture and we do that by engaging them in fun activities.”
SIA meets every other Tuesday at 9 p.m. in Kiddie 360, the next meeting is on Oct. 26.
