On Wednesday, September 28th, The Filipino Association of Stevens Tech (FAST) hosted the Masskara Festival. Maskara, also known as the Festival Smiles, instills positivity and happiness.
Maskara began with a performance by TECHNique, the dance club at Stevens. Following the performance, FAST gave a presentation on the history of Masskara. At the event, guests could sample a variety of traditional Filipino foods including Pancit Bihon, Leche Flan, and Sisig. Attendees could also created traditional Masks to the festival. FAST performed traditional cultural Filipino dances at the festival, specfically Pandango, Subli and Tinikling, each one of which has a different representation. Pandango represents balance and concentration, Subli is the worship to the town’s icon, the Holy Cross, and Tinikling imitates the Tinikling bird’s legendary grace and speed.
President of FAST, Katelyn Llamas, said this was “the first time hosting this event and she was very excited about it, and hoped that FAST could host even more events like this in the future”. As the night came to an end, members of the audience participated in learning the basics of Tinikling, line dancing, and freestyle. The Masskara Festival not only stayed true to its traditions, but also created a very entertaining and memorable introduction to the Filipino festival for the audience.
