SAVE, Students Against Violating the Earth, hosted a DIY eco-friendly product event on Tuesday in Hayden Lounge. The event gave both visitors and environmental club members the opportunity to make their own soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and toothpastes out of all-natural ingredients for free.
The majority of the club members crowded Hayden’s kitchen to make soaps out of essential oils and familiar household items, such as baking soda and sugar. Other members could be found in the lounge teaching new visitors about the harmful nature of mass manufactured hair and body care products. Topics such as plastic micro beads, chemical toxicity, and antibiotic resistant bacteria were addressed through fliers for guests as well as conversation. “We wanted to let people think about sustainability in a fun and creative place!” said SAVE president, Rob Whipple.
“Definitely try out the brand Lush!” said Kerrin McLaughlin, SAVE member, to those interested in environmentally friendly products. “Their products are my guilty pleasure – so expensive, but I feel good when I purchase them. And, they smell incredible!” Kerrin also recommended products at Whole Foods to those who may not want to spend as much money while experimenting with vegan and sustainable products. According to McLaughlin, the club hosted the event to bring awareness to others, in a fun and free way, the damages non-environmentally friendly soaps cause.
