A Science and Technology Institute such as Stevens will often get a bad rep when it comes to the arts. People often consider STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) schools to have nonexistent, or at best bare-bones, arts programs. The upcoming festival at Stevens intends to disprove that.
On-Point is a new festival, replacing the historic yearly Techfest, and takes one day to prove that Stevens loves art. Previous techfests were smaller, with less artists and therefore less fun. This year, Stevens students decided to up the ante. It will be including all different types of art, from bands to singer-songwriters to poets to comedians to visual artists to even dance group, who will all be preforming from doors open to close.
Doors open at 1pm and close at 10pm, but the artists playing throughout the day on the two stages won’t be the only thing at the festival. There will be booths from multiple clubs around Stevens. Make sure to bring some cash too, since there will be more food vendors than a person could possibly eat from, all from local establishments. There will also be plenty of art for sale.
So what’s the catch? Nothing this awesome could actually be this easy to get into? Well, there is one minor rule. 18+. For all of you out there that panicked before remembering you’re over 18, consider this further positive. No kids allowed.
“This event is meant to break conventions of previous Stevens festivals” said co-director Andy Waldron. “Its meant to bring together Stevens with Hoboken and outsiders. And lastly, its meant to break the idea that STEM schools can’t foster a strong arts culture.”
The event will be almost entirely student run, from the ticket booths to all promotions, from stage hands to many of the over 30 artists performing. The artists hail from all over the North-East, most commonly from the New York and Boston areas. The lineup of events, as well as forms to enter yourself into the lineup, can be found online at the official website of the event.
Where are all these students coming from? Mostly the humanities majors of Stevens, but anyone passionate about the arts is involved, and notably, many fraternities and sororities from the vibrant Greek life community at Stevens will be sending volunteers.
How and when can you attend this festival? Any Stevens students and Alumni can attend for free, just show ID at the entrance, and anyone else just interested in the fun of it can buy tickets, on sale now at the official website onpointfest.com. The festival will be on Oct. 1, from 1-10pm, and you cannot miss it.
