Fire breaks out on Washington Street, fundraising efforts underway

A serious fire broke out in the 500 block of Washington Street last Saturday. Starting around 10:00 p.m. of unknown origin, the fire affected buildings containing residential space, a Verizon store, Washington General Store, Dear Hannah clothing store, and local Indian Bistro, Karma Kafe. According to NJ.com, while no residents were hurt, 14 firefighters suffered injuries ranging from hypothermia, exhaustion, and smoke inhalation. Jersey City Fire Department, North Hudson Regional Fire, and Rescue and Teaneck Fire Department all contributed to the fire-fighting effort, which was placed under control before 2 a.m. Sunday. A fundraising event organized by The Catholic Community of Saints Peter & Paul will be taking place at The Kolo Klub on Friday, the 19th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Additionally, over $15,000 was raised on a GoFundMe page for one Hoboken Police Officer, Jalen Williams, who lived in one of the apartments.
