Hart Welles to introduce “Stevens, the School of Innovation”

How many students constantly complain about the different minute hassles about Stevens, such as Pierce food or the ratio? Well, if this is students’ idea of a fun pastime, then they might want to listen to “Stevens My Life Is You” (if they haven’t already), written by Stevens’ own Hart Welles. “Stevens My Life Is You” is a musical parody of Stevens, filled with different anecdotes that will have laughing hysterically. Today, Welles has written a second song called “Stevens, the School of Innovation” after encouragement from his friends and fans. This second song will be released within the next couple of weeks, and will be accompanied by a music video, unlike the first one.

Welles has been a fanatic of musical comedy since childhood, which played an immense part for his inspiration in writing “Stevens My Life Is You.” So, when he noticed that Stevens didn’t have a school song, like most other universities, he was inspired to write one. Welles also thinks complaining over things is a good way for people to come together and bond, which was one of his main goals. Most of the material from the song was gathered from comments posted by Stevens students on the Stevens version of the “my life is average” website. Once the song was released, it was met with warm embrace by the Stevens students. In fact, Welles says that one of the nicest things his fans did was do a cover at an open mic night. “They did a better job than I did,” recalled Welles.

“Stevens, the School of Innovation” is written from Welles’ senior year perspective, compared to the first song that was written from a younger, sophomore year perspective. The melody is very similar to the original song, once again played on a ukulele. The basic idea of the two songs are very similar: some of the new jokes included are regarding Techfest and the Howe “wind tunnel.” One major difference between the songs is that the music video that will have shots accompanying the lyrics; it will even have special guest stars like Kevin Ryan, who said he would be “honored” to be in the video, and, potentially, Captain Maggi. Stay tuned to Welles’ YouTube channel (youtube.com/Picklejohn12) for the song’s eventual release. Welles will also be performing the song at the next open mic night.
