Karaoke gatherings embody many different aspects of Filipino culture: singing and dancing, eating, and spending time with family and friends. It’s incorporated into parties, family and community events, and even television game shows. Last Thursday, the Filipino Association of Stevens Tech. (FAST) celebrated Filipino culture on campus by hosting Karaoke Night in Jacobus Lounge. Karaoke differs from having an open mic in that there’s no pressure to be a stellar performer. According to FAST member Jan Erik Tyler “Jet” Adlawan, “It’s all about having a good time with friends, family, and food!”
The turnout for the event demonstrated the appeal of this low-stress activity. Jacobus was filled with song from the moment Karaoke Night started, and the singing continued well past the scheduled end of the event. The mics weren’t packed up until 2 a.m. In those five hours, students covered everything from Drake to Disney to Les Miserables. Dr. Kevin Ryan even stopped by to perform a rendition of Dean Martin’s “Ain’t That A Kick In The Head.”
FAST holds general body meetings every other Tuesday at 9 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for December 1.
