Coming to this school, I knew that if I wanted to participate in extracurricular activities such as the Honor Board and The Stute, I would have to balance my work and other activities in order to stay afloat.
I have come to realize that I can do this fairly well, but the people who I admire most of all who have to have this art down to a science are the athletes here at Stevens. Consisting of a good majority of this school, the athletes here definitely know how to balance both work and play. Between long and strenuous practices, training, and competitions along with a heavy load of school work, it takes a lot of willpower and discipline to keep on top of everything.
Even though I personally don’t play a varsity sport, I find myself with a hefty amount of work on my plate during the week, especially as the end of the semester approaches. For example, from this week on I have to build a razor scooter in SolidWorks for my graphics final, work on my report and oral presentation for Design I, study for a Thursday MA124 midterm, study for a Friday E115 exam, and work on the bulk of my E115 final project. Just listing these things makes me realize all that I have to do, but I also realize that other people probably have a lot more on their plate than I do.
This heavy workload on top of my other activities outside of classes that take up a lot of my time is a bit difficult sometimes, but I always manage to complete everything. To think that athletes have this or an even greater amount of work on top of their commitment to their sport, I often wonder how they get everything done.
It is definitely admirable; even if I have a question about Calculus, one athlete in particular is sure to make the time to answer any questions I may have, even on top of his busy schedule. Overall, I am impressed with the dedication and balance that the athletes have to maintain in order to succeed.
