Flares, fauxs, and fringe: you’re right to retro

What comes around goes around, especially in the fashion world. What’s the current throwback? Seventies boho styles [Editor’s Note: Boho-chic is a bohemian- and hippie-inspired fashion style]. Though summer is winding down, seventies inspired fashions will carry on right through fall featuring flares, faux furs and fringe.

Yes it’s time to bring out those bellbottoms hiding in the corners of your closets, because 2015 has been the comeback of Woodstock through Disco era fashions. While skinny jeans are still the favorite staple item, celebrities like Heidi Klum, Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma Roberts and model Emily Ratajkowski have been spotted rocking the resurgence of flared jeans. Style them with a breezy tee for a comfy, carefree weekend look or add a pair of chunky heels to dress them up and keep your toes from disappearing. Not feeling quite so bold? Try a slim boot cut instead!

Seventies inspiration most definitely means fringe too, which can be a great statement accessory for bags, boots and jackets. Fringed and tasseled bags are popping up all over from the runways of Ralph Lauren, Burberry and Rebecca Minkoff to everyday stores like Topshop and Forever 21. Shoe designers like Sam Edelman and Steve Madden have also been taken over by the fringe bootie. Fringe can be a heavy accessory on a shoe but looks super cute when balanced with a slim or sleek outfit such as skinny jeans or flirty dresses and skirts in fitted, skater, and a-line cuts. Of course, the loudest seventies piece is by far the fringe jacket. As it starts to get cooler, throw a fringe jacket over a basic tee and jeans or roll up the sleeves and let a long sleeve shirt poke out. It’s also a great way to stay warm in your favorite summer dresses during the summer to fall transition.

Lastly, this fall is exploding in furs and leather, but keep it animal friendly by opting for fauxs instead of the real deal. The button front, suede, a-line skirt is everywhere and will carry right from summer into fall. In colder weather, style it with a long sleeve, mock or turtleneck shirt over tights and tall boots. These skirts most commonly come in brown or black, but fun colors and patterns or scalloped edges can add a bit more to a basic piece. Suede dresses are also popular for fall in shirtdress, shift or a-line styles and the now-in fringe accessories most commonly come in suede or leather. If it can be made, it can be made in suede.

From the festivals to the streets, seventies inspired pieces bring a fun, boho chic look to both summer and fall fashions. If you’re looking to spice up your wardrobe, try adding a bit of texture with suede or fringe, break up your weekends with flared jeans or throw on a kimono, denim jumpsuit or wool fedora for more seventies inspired styles.
