Words from a former freshman: do it all

College is a time of exploration—it’s time to figure out what you really want in life. You need to open your mind to new experiences! You really need to do it all.

Some of the most unforgettable moments will come from pushing yourself to do more and be more. Join another club, try for another ‘A,’ make another friend, read another chapter, stay up another hour. Be active in the Stevens community and don’t miss a thing. Most clubs welcome new members any time throughout the year, and pretty much all organizations have free open events on campus. Just check the Student Life Newsletter and mark your calendar! You may end up running for a leadership position, networking your way into a great internship, or finding a new passion.

Don’t forget the reason why you came to Stevens—make your education worth every penny. Ask questions in class, do your homework, and absolutely go to reviews and professors’ office hours. There are also peer mentors, advisors, and tutors to help you. When you have four years until you need to graduate and look for a job, grades from your general course work freshman year may not seem important. However, they will be permanently on your transcript and affect your cumulative GPA. You really don’t want to end up retaking classes, and trying to fit retakes into your study plan for improved grades. Don’t throw away everything you’ve worked for! Keep your high standards for academic achievement.

Although it might be a struggle to balance rigorous academics and a social life, it’s just so important to have fun and spend time away from the work, maybe even away from campus. Washington Street is full of shops and restaurants, and for $2.75 you can get to New York City or to Newport mall. Explore beyond Stevens. Get a taste of what it will be like to really live on your own and be independent.

Stevens chose you because you were a good “fit” for the school, and hopefully you chose Stevens for the same reason. I think that any student who comes here can thrive here. You’ll get over the hurdles that will push you to stretch your arms and legs, and grow! You’re not alone. Everyone is looking to have an incredible college experience, so find at least one good friend to witness your life for the next four or five years. Make memories, and do it all together. Congratulations ducklings, and welcome class of 2019!
