The Stevens Dramatic Society will be performing their long-awaited shadowcast of South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday night. The Society has been practicing the performance for the past several months and is eagerly anticipating a big turnout. The shadowcast is a long-standing tradition of the Dramatic Society, so this is a performance you won’t want to miss. I interviewed the Main Director of the production, Kevin Alvarez, about the show.
What is a shadowcast?
A shadowcast is a sort of pantomime. While a movie plays on a screen, we have actors reenacting the entire movie in front of the screen. At times it’s a perfect replication of the movie itself, but the benefit of not being a movie means we can interact with the audience in different ways. The most commonly known shadowcast is the Rocky Horror Picture Show, but there are others such as REPO! The Genetic Opera.
Which episode of South Park will you be performing?
We are performing the movie “South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut” (1999) in its entirety.
How long have you been practicing? How ready do you feel?
Since February! With shadowcasts, you always worry if you’re not mirroring the movie perfectly. However, shadowcast success is measured by how much the audience gets into it. We think we have a show that people will love, so we’re ready for you if you’re ready for us!

What are some of the past shadowcasts you have done?
Rocky Horror is what we’re best known for. The SDS Shadowcast Committee has done Rocky for the past eight years around Halloween. Starting last year, we also do a spring shadowcast around the end of the semester. Last year’s inaugural spring shadowcast was Mulan.
What do you have in store for future shadowcasts?
I’m pretty sure that, if we didn’t do Rocky next fall, we’d have an uprising. However, we brainstorm different ideas post-Rocky for the Spring show. We’ve thrown around doing Zoolander, Moulin Rouge, and The Room, but they’ve all been turned down for one reason or another. I’d personally really like to do the Clue movie, but some time to space ourselves from Boken Clue would be nice. We’ll let you know once we figure something out.
When and where will the event take place?
May 4th, 5th, and 6th in Burchard 118 at 9:30 PM!
