ANAD vigil hosted to raise awareness of disorders

By Susana Restrepo

On Thursday February 26 at 9:15 p.m., the sorority Delta Phi Epsilon hosted a ANAD (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders) vigil in Babbio Atrium. For the past week, Delta Phi Epsilon sat in front of Pierce Dining Hall selling wristbands with the logo “Accept Yourself,” cut up pieces of construction paper to write a special message on that were to be hung at the event, and raising awareness for the event. The donations went to ANAD, an association that helps victims of eating disorders as well as raises awareness of the evils of eating disorders.

ANAD is one of Delta Phi Epsilon’s philanthropy organizations. They raise money or volunteer throughout the year. This event was planned out by sister 3/5 Biomedical Engineer Jessica Iannacone. It composed of Delta Phi Epsilon sister Kristina Miller speaking about her crippling battle with anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating,“All of these things we use for insulting are skin deep, but eating disorders are not,” the 3/5 mechanical engineer spoke.

Following her speech was a performance of “So Small” by Carrie Underwood performed by other sister Shannon Pierce on vocals and Ben Yurcisin on guitar. After this, the Quackapella performed “Firework” by Katy Perry.

To finish off the event, candles were handed out around the room and lit and a vigil was read aloud. “I will accept myself as I am. I will accept others as they are,” were read aloud in the audience.
