The Stevens Underground Music Awareness Committee, or SUMAC, hosted a concert event last Friday night featuring Brooklyn pop-punk group Chumped, as well as performances from local bands Cutters; Basement Beers; Corrina, Corinna; and Friends in Distraction.
The event was held in the Jacobus lounge. Doors opened at 7 p.m., and the music began at 7:30 p.m. and ran until around 11 p.m..
Friends and Distraction was the first band to perform. “I liked them a lot. They got better as they played. The singer was awkward sometimes, but the drummer was very good. Overall, [the performance] was good,” said Stevens student Ben Traskunov. Friends in Distraction’s set lasted about 20 minutes. They were followed by Corrina, Corrina, Basement Beers, and Cutters (in that order), whose sets also lasted 20 minutes, before Chumped finally took the stage.
SUMAC President Matt Milideo mentioned some of the types of bands that have performed at their concerts in the past. “[We’ve had] electronic, indie, punk, and hardcore groups. [But] we’re open to all genres.” The organization will be hosting another concert night later on February 25 on Wednesday featuring performances from Priests, Tenement, Vacation, and This is Me Looking Dangerous. It will be in the Jacobus lounge once again.
For students interested in seeing their favorite underground musicians perform at Stevens, Matt’s advice is to come to SUMAC meetings. “Meetings are Thursdays at 9 p.m., and we’ve got pages on Facebook and Tumblr. You also can email us at sumac@stevens.edu.” The organization also now has a Snapchat account under the username “SUMACNJ.”
