It’s only the beginning of my second semester here, and I’m already pretty active on campus. My calendar is filled with club meetings pretty much every day, which may look too busy. However, I absolutely love what I do here at Stevens.
It’s a personal philosophy that a person should try to take advantage of any and all opportunities when they come. So if it’s in the Student Life Newsletter, it’s in my calendar- whether it’s joining a club, going to see a guest speaker, or applying for a job. Being an active member of the community increases your connections and provides opportunities to make new friends, but more importantly, it affords leadership opportunities. It’s important to get involved early and determine your goals for involvement on campus.
Some of you may already know that I hold two executive board positions, for The Stute and the Biomedical Engineering Society. It’s great because I love leading groups of people and contributing as much as I can. Although I can attest to the benefits of being social, being preoccupied with has one downside: it’s really hard to make time for a personal life.
Before coming here, I heard that the Stevens gender ratio was a big deal. Obviously, I wasn’t worried about anything because I’m a girl and there are so many guys. I thought that it would be easy to find someone special. Nope. The “Stevens ratio” doesn’t work in your favor if you’re an especially busy person. You just don’t have time.
Okay, so I’m not too busy for a social life. Despite my past articles, I realize that I do have some good friends on campus and I make time to hang out with them. But I don’t have time to commit to a relationship because that requires more time and energy – two invaluable items for a person who is constantly running between events.
So now that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, my head is saying one thing and my heart is saying another. It makes sense to focus on maintaining high academics, earning leadership positions, networking, and building a resume – preparing for a happy future. Yet, I could be with someone who makes me happy now by being in a relationship.
In any case, I guess it’s too late to find a date. At least I’ll still have a busy night – complete with lab reports, essays, budgets, sketch writing, and layout editing.
