Regarding the closure of the Schaefer Athletic Center:
I have never been a man for athletics. I never really connected to any sport, except swimming. While most of this stems from my lack of hand-eye coordination, it doesn’t change the fact that I really don’t have much love for other sports.
That said, this weekend was the Superbowl.
Now, before I say anything more, know that I am a born and bred Detroit Lions fan, and by that, I mean I am really not much of a Lions fan. If anything, I watch the games when my family does.
Needless to say, most of my weekend was corrupted because of this “holiday”.
The lines for the laundry room were significantly larger for a Saturday when I went, and driving around in the city was much worse than normal. No doubt, people were out preparing for the big day; buying snacks and booze, tidying up chores so they could enjoy themselves on Superbowl Sunday. Even the Athletic Center closed early (which may have been due to the storm, but whatever)!
This makes me very grumpy. I understand the appeal of American Football, it is a very tough sport that requires concentration, determination, grit, stamina, peak physical conditions, and also a hefty bit of money (for the stadiums and media coverage aspect). But, really? To what end? Across the nation there have been all sorts of problems with American Football, scandals and debilitating injuries, what-have-you, so I really think that we have to ease up on it.
We hold these players, this “holiday” up on some pedestal, like they are celebrities or something (which I never understood either) all so that people can do what? Fawn over their football heroes during the football season? No, I don’t get it. And I really don’t get why people have to close things early in anticipation for parties that just give people more venues to drink and be loud, both activities that I usually can’t stand.
I know my opinions are harsh, and I don’t really expect people to agree with me (especially given the current love affair with the sport), but I do implore everyone to ease up a little bit on the hyper-fandom of American Football.
It’s just a game, and the championship of that game lies on a day like any other. Please let me live that day the same as any other. Thank you.
