After a long and relaxing winter break, I still have to admit that it’s nice to return to my life at Stevens. I couldn’t wait for last semester to end, but I really missed this place. My life back in my hometown and my life here at school are very different. Back at home, I wasn’t as busy and I had time to think about what happened that made me so bitter before I left.
I concluded that a lot of things in life happen by random chance and that you just have to accept them and work past them. This is what I like to call “rolling with the dice.” It’s my new motto. It’s very similar to “roll with the punches,” but I’m acknowledging that getting hit could be random chance. Because some things are just bad luck — or bad timing — and you can’t change what has happened, so it’s not useful to get upset or wonder why things had to happen to you. Some situations just sort of happen, and instead of looking backward and trying to place blame, it is time for me to start looking forward. For this new semester resolution, I’m going to be more positive about my life here at Stevens.
As we were just about one week back at Stevens, Mother Nature had us canceling classes in preparation for the Juno blizzard. This just happened to put Monday afternoon classes even more behind schedule. This winter storm Juno had some poor timing, but many students are embracing the snow, building snow forts and other creations with this opportunity. It’s all about having the right attitude, because life is what you make it.
I want to make my Stevens career the best years of my life. I want to stay inspired and take new chances this semester. It’s not enjoyable or healthy to be uptight and controlling in life. I’d even say that’s impossible to accomplish. It’s better to welcome opportunity, make lemonade out of lemons, and keep moving forward with whatever life gives you.
I hope that all of my classmates see this semester as a fresh and new start. It doesn’t matter what year you are — it’s never too late to start rolling with the dice. I’m happy to be back and see familiar faces, walk in and recognize the smell of Davis Hall, and hear Pierce workers making jokes. Although Stevens has its issues, we really have a nice community here.
