It is amazing to see that a technology-centered school like Stevens could have such a variety of performing arts events and opportunities. One group, the Stevens Dramatic Society, has grown and spread influence throughout campus life producing a play every Fall and a musical every Spring. Established in 1910, the society’s purpose is, “to promote interest in the Performing Arts and to produce great theatre”.
This semester, the society is doing just that with their drama Twelve Angry Men. The show opened Thursday Nov. 13 at 9 p.m. with following shows on Friday Nov. at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m in the DeBaun auditorium. The tickets for the show are $3 at the door with Stevens ID, or $7 for general admission. Attendees will also be able to participate in a raffle and could win or purchase show t-shirts.
The show focuses on a tiered and worn out jury after a long and hot murder trial. The jury is then stuffed in a hot room together to decide the fate of a boy accused of murder. Sick of the heat and the court house, the jury all seem reluctant to stay much longer and want to bring the trial to an end. Upon a vote, all members find the convicted guilty except for one. The one person then tries her best to convince the rest of the jury that there is some doubt to the “evidence” in this murder. Will she be able to convince the other jury members or will the boy be found guilty of a crime he may not have committed?
The play reminds us to pause and reflect on life before we rush to decisions. Sometimes, we may need to stop and think about how our actions might effect others before we act. It also draws heavily on the idea that doubt can be a very powerful thing. In this case, the jury should be without a doubt that the boy committed the crime. Each member learns that when there is a doubt, the simplest choice suddenly becomes extremely difficult.
For those interested in seeing the production this weekend, the Stevens Dramatic Society will be hosting a Mocktail Hour at 5 p.m. in Hayden lounge. This event will be SDS’s R.A.G.E. event and attending will win your class points. The event will include Virgin Baybreezes, strawberry daiquiris, margaritas, and Arnold Palmers as beverages, antipasto, a whipped cream pie eating contest, and more. Afterwords, everyone can head over to the show together and receive more points. Students will also receive points for each show attended.
