Dancing may not be the top activity of most of the students at Stevens, but this past week, that changed for some people. Theta Phi Alpha, Five Elements, and TECHnique hosted their second annual competition to determine the next best dance crew at Stevens, with all proceeds benefiting the Hoboken Homeless Shelter.
This competition had each of the five groups performing a dance of their own choreography to a medley of songs. The one requirement was that each number had to include a song by Beyoncé. Many of the popular singer’s hits were played throughout the evening, including “Halo,” “Sweet Dreams,” and “Love on Top.” The two most popular songs of the night were “Diva” and “Crazy in Love,” with “Diva” in particular inspiring screams from the audience whenever the hook started.
The evening kicked off with an opening number where the three host organizations all did a dance on their own. Then, the competition began. The first group, Run SDT, was comprised of girls from Sigma Delta Tau. Their number featured some enthusiastic dancing as well as a storyline with a left-out friend finding her way back into the group.
Another group, TURBUL3NCE, was formed out of an idea: what would happen if the seemingly very different styles of hip hop and ballroom dancing were combined? The number that followed was well-choreographed and interesting, as the two styles meshed and changed.
MGC, the sole all male group, showed off their strolling skills in a rigorous dance number. This was the number most loved by the crowd, either for the guys’ moves or just for their presence. They ended up winning third place.
2 Fast 2 Furious, the group that ended up winning second, won best costumes for their matching blazers. A group made up of FAST members who enjoyed dancing, the different levels of skill that 2 Fast 2 Furious members started out with were not immediately evident as they danced.
A group of four freshmen, SQUAD, came out as the winners of the competition. While it may not have been a huge surprise, their freshman status gave them an unknown quality. Their long medley of R&B hits from the early 2000s could easily have gone wrong, but their amazing dance moves and energy thrilled the crowd. The fact that SQUAD seemed just as shocked as they were happy added to their victory celebration.
The most important thing in the end was that money was raised for the Hoboken Homeless shelter. It’s rare that such a fun event for Stevens students can end up helping the less fortunate in such a remarkable way.Theta Pi Alpha, Five Elements, and TECHnique made an excellent choice by producing this event, and there is no doubt that they will strive to make next year’s Stevens Next Best Dance Crew even better than this year’s.
