Letters to the editor and the registrar

This is a response to the Letter to the Editor provided to us last week: while I may not agree with your consistent reference to the Wizard of Oz, I wholehearted agree with your disposition against the Registrar.

As a proud Michigander from my Mitten State, I know what it feels like to worry about traveling home for the holidays. I squirm as December comes in, still not knowing when my flight should be scheduled for. I distinctly recall my freshman year, phoning home frantically to my parents, “What do you mean you don’t know when your last final is? It’s almost Halloween Joe! The price already increased by $100.00!” It hurts hearing that, especially when there is nothing you can do.

What I had to do in years prior was schedule my flight in October for, like, December 22, definitely after the end of the finals period, usually the night after. But that is rough, especially if I happen to have a final the last day and then manage to pack all of my things last minute to catch my flight. Additionally, I also miss out on a week or two with my family (the likes of which I only get to see about twice a year anyways, due to my Co-Op Schedule) and I have to go closer to Christmas, which means the airlines are absolutely packed with people.

I really thank this person for writing that Letter to the Editor last week; it really needs to be said.

The Office of the Registrar has got to get its stuff together.

I’ve said it before in a few editorials, I think, but between double booking rooms at the start of the semester and screwing up times of classes, and not being able to create an adequate (possible) final exam schedule in a timely manner, I’ve even heard of people being placed in the incorrect major. I vaugely recall a friend who was not able to pursue a Master’s degree in one of the Master’s Programs that Stevens has because the Registrar didn’t have him listed in the correct major, and he missed a deadline to apply because of this error.

Really?

Excuse my fuming rage over the matter, but I simply pay way too much at this school to get this kind of “quality” from the administration.

What on earth are they going to do when the Stevens Master Plan really starts kicking and we have double the undergraduate students at Stevens? It will be an absolute nightmare. Students will get their majors misplaced which could cause huge scheduling errors. And I’ll laugh when the time comes for room assignments for classes to come around. We’ll be reading Shakespeare in the biology lab, taking calculus in the CAL office, and thermodynamics in the pool! (That actually might be a lot of fun, come to think of it…)

Please, I beg of you, invite the Systems Engineering majors into your department and let them look at the system. This would be such an excellent way for them to get a credible experience in the field, optimizing the way these processes work. And if you don’t want anyone to help you, at least acknowledge these very legitimate complaints and set some policies in motion to rectify these errors.

And if you don’t like my views, anyone, not just the Registrar, then you are more than welcome to write a Letter to the Editor, same as this person last week, to address any issues you have, with me, The Stute, or anything else you can think of.
