As you prepare for the madness of Halloween 2014, what better way to get into the Halloween sprit than playing some horror games? We’ve compiled what we think are the best horror games of 2014.
Metro Redux is a compilation of Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light, bundling them together on next-gen consoles. Both are survival-horror games in which the player navigates through the ruins of post -pocalyptic nuclear Russia. Both of these games have a creepy vibe, there’s jump-scares galore, and mysterious creatures called Dark Ones. Oh, and don’t forget to change your air filters. A lot.
The Last of Us was one of the greatest games released in the last generation. Combining superb storytelling, character development, and world-building with survival-horror elements, The Last of Us deserved its critical acclaim. Pick it up now, remastered specifically for the PS4 and marvel at its gorgeous aesthetics. Just make sure you aim for the head when dealing with clickers.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter puts players in the shoes of Paul Prospero, a supernatural detective searching for a missing boy. It is one of the creepiest games I’ve ever played. It’s got a True Detective-vibe about it, with an insane story that runs the gamut from murder and mental illness to tentacles and aliens. The ambient soundtrack made me feel as though I was in the forbidden forest from the Harry Potter series, and some of the environments kept me up at night, long after I finished the game.
From Shinji Mikami, the creative director of Resident Evil 4, comes The Evil Within. A third-person survival horror game, The Evil Within puts players in creepy environments with legitimately frightening enemies. Not to mention, the game is not easy. Fans of RE4 won’t regret picking up The Evil Within. Oh, no, Boxhead, he’s behind me. Gotta go!
Last but not least is Alien: Isolation, a first-person survival horror game based on the Alien franchise. Players assume the role of Amanda Ripley, who is transferred to a Sevastopol space station only to find that the Alien has devastated it. She must use expert survival skills to evade the Alien and find a way off the ship, but the Alien is constantly on the hunt. Be careful, and make sure to hold your breath.
