Stevens Institute of Technology is known for sleepless students. Whether it is studying late in the library or sitting in Hayden Lounge playing League of Legends, students tend to stay up past midnight. As the hours grow late and time flies by, students get hungry. For the longest time, hungry students would find themselves wondering down the street to find themselves at Bagels on the Hudson, or “Bagels.” This establishment, on the corner of 8th and Washington Street, is legendary for being open 24 hours a day and catering to hordes of late night Stevens students.
However, at the end of June, Bagels closed to renovate the entire store. Bagels has been around for 20 years and needed a total upgrade. The establishment was set to reopen at the beginning of September to accommodate to the students returning to classes at Stevens, but was delayed because the building, being so old, caused issues while trying to install new appliances and additions. The delay created much anticipation, as freshmen who had not experienced Bagels for themselves had heard of the famous late night eatery. Freshmen even began to adopt phrases such as, “I really want to go to Bagels right now,” before they have even experienced it for themselves.
Bagels on the Hudson finally reopened on Wednesday, October 22 with a brand new store and completely modern appearance. The grand reopening revealed new floors and blue tile counters, with more open space and a clean atmosphere. Among the additions are a brand new soup and salad bar, an ice coffee machine, a flat screen TV, WiFi, and a shiny new display case with baskets of each kind of bagel.
For those of who remember the old wooden shelves the bagels use to sit in, the new bagel display is much more attractive and easier to find desired bagels.
As it has been, Bagels is still open for 24 hours a day and is also still accepting DuckBills. While Bagels used to stop serving breakfast at certain times, it will now be serving breakfast 24 hours a day as well. Also, as usual, they are still selling all kinds of sandwiches and snacks. The snacks include: cereal, chips, Oreos, yogurt, and much more.
Even with all these additions, Bagels is not done renovating. They plan to have their own outdoor sitting area for customers to be coming this Spring.
Freshman Casey Moon said, “All the upperclassmen I knew talked about it and about how it wasn’t there, and then on Monday it blew up that it was opening on Wednesday. So I went with some friends, and it was amazing because they were not Pierce bagels, and they were warm and amazing!”
Now that Bagels is back in full swing, students staying up late studying for midterms will have the option to just walk down 8th Street again for some bagels, rather than walking farther to other late night stores. For those getting up early for class or co-op, Bagels will also be there for you to start your day off right.
