Students win big at Casino Night

Fizzy punch, sparkling red and blue glasses, and a suave dealer dressed in a crisp button down and classic black slacks. This sight greeted the hopeful Stevens students who attended last Wednesday’s Casino Night with Lady Luck at their side. The event was hosted by the Ethnic Student Council (ESC) in the Babbio lobby as a means to unite the various campus RSOs with the rest of the student body. The ESC’s advisor, Abha Huckoo, explained, “Casino Night [is] a great way to bring all the cultural organizations together to put on a fun and educational event for all the students.” In fact, while many of the ongoing games were old favorites like Texas Hold ‘Em, Craps, and Roulette, Moneyball brought something new to the table by featuring culturally related questions such as, “What is the largest city in Greece?” and “What country is the best producer of coffee?”. Student Kassandra Marrero commented, “Every time you don’t know the answer to a question, you learn something new.”

The night was a huge success thanks to both the ESC and High Rollers Casino and DJ Entertainment whose employee, Jerry Hall, said has been helping host Casino Night every year for the past ten years. Mr. Hall was present to guide the volunteer student dealers and teach them the rules of the games. Michelle Moreira, a Stevens student, said she was happy to have volunteered and “would definitely do it again!” She was busy dealing a game of Black Jack for a group of grad students participating in the Brazilian exchange student program that had come out for a fun night of cards and tokens.

Of course, the best nights always end in prizes, and the ESC did not disappoint! Upon entrance, students could swipe in to get a free ticket worth 500 chips. For those that were lucky, the chips accumulated throughout the night and every 100 points could be exchanged for a raffle ticket to win some very cool prizes. A few of those rewards included an iPad mini, Beats headphones, Super Smash Bros for 3DS and a My Cloud 2TB hard drive.

Look out for the next ESC event, Fright Night, coming to Palmer Lawn on October 31!
