On September 18, the Italian Club kicked off the semester by having a Festa Del Gelato on Schafer Lawn. Excited students waited in line to get a taste of the ice cream-like Italian treat. There were five flavors offered: chocolate, strawberry, cookies and cream, coffee, and pistachio. While there were cups available, many patrons had their gelato in bread instead. This unorthodox holder for gelato allowed them to take more scoops, and most left the Italian Club’s stand satisfied.
The Italian Club’s mission is to keep the culture of Italy alive through Stevens. They offer free Italian lessons for members and host several events throughout the years, many of which have to do with Italy’s cuisine. Their club fair table gave out free pizza to entice new members, they have Cannoli Nights throughout the year, and this Festa Del Gelato was the second annual. Members explained that gelato was perfect for this kind of year, since students still want to beat the heat and would wait in line for a cold dessert.
President of the Italian Club, Tommaso Di Gesaro was present at the event for its entirety, talking up the Italian club in between serving students their gelato. When asked about the Italian club’s next event, the plan was Cannoli Night, which should be sometime in October. Gesaro could not give much away about the night, but advised people to “Get your costumes ready!” as a sneak peek.
With the Festa Del Gelato as an indicator, it’s obvious that this apparently Halloween-themed Cannoli Night will be enjoyable and full of delectable food and good conversation. The Italian Club started the year with a great event, and they have nowhere to go from here but up!
