On Friday the 28th, at 9:00 p.m., the Entertainment Committee hosted an event in Jacobus Lounge that took students minds off winter and the crazy cold weather outside. Named Duck After Dark: Island Paradise, the event centered on a tropical island theme and aimed to provide a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere. Platters of food were served and the event gave students a great opportunity to wind down from a hectic week of academics and stress.
During the event, Jacobus Lounge was transformed; the entire room was decorated with a tropical island theme and there were drink stands that were extensively decorated. Soda, water, and Capri Sun were served in several tubs made out of air filled tubes.
Towards the side of the room, platters of Cuban food were served for students to try and experiment. All of the food was ordered from local Hoboken restaurant La Isla, which has featured on Food Network twice, on both Bobby Flay’s “Throwdown with Bobby Flay” and Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” The food served included rice, beans, papa rellenos (mashed potato stuffed with ground meat), chicken empanadas, beef empanadas, arroz con pollo (chicken with rice), carne guisada (beef and potato stew), and maduros (plantain). Many students elected to try the unknown and ended up enjoying what was served.
In addition, numerous activities were offered to the students that attended the Duck After Dark event. Some students worked intensely on a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle with a picture of a beach; others were more involved in arts and crafts and either painted little magnets during the event or made decorations with foam stickers for their room. Content and full, some students left the event early. A lot of students attended Cannoli Night earlier and decided to stop by for more food. Students were free to come and go throughout the night, which contributed to the very laid-back atmosphere of the event.
Last but certainly not least, a Reggae band came in to perform throughout the event and added much liveliness to the crowd of students in the lounge. The band played a lot of music, some of which added a touch of islander, rhythm, and blues to current pop hits. Students danced and jammed to the music and as the night progressed, the band started playing popular dance music that got a lot more students involved, such as the Cha-Cha and Cotton-Eyed Joe. The music played on through the night, lasting until the very last hour of the very last day of February.
