On Saturday the 23rd, Sigma Phi Epsilon and WCPR teamed up to put on a Winter Showcase in Hayden Lounge, an open mic night were students performed music and standup comedy.
The event drew over thirty students. WCPR’s Patrick MacLane ran lights and sound for the event, which host and performer Barry Travis described as “like being at a Muse concert.”
The night started with sophomore Andy Cernera performing a stand up set, which touched upon dating at Stevens. He was followed by senior John Baldassano, singing and playing guitar. His cover of Tenacious D’s song “Tribute,” complete with growling, drew cheers from the crowd.
“The highlight of the night was when Andrew Bean and Sean Richards sang Ke$ha” said sophomore Vinny Raimondi. Their acoustic take on her hit song “Die Young” had the audience singing and clapping along.
Seniors Michael McAree and Colleen Cloonan performed a vocal duet of “The Prayer.” They were followed by two bands, Man the Destroyer and Social Ineptitude. The bands, of largely the same lineup, both came from SigEp. Social Ineptitude features Barry Travis playing bass, Justen Puglisi on drums, and Andrew Bean performing vocals, keys, and guitar. Man the Destroyer adds Steve McKenna singing and playing guitar. In the past, Social Ineptitude competed at WCPR’s Battle of the Bands 2013.
Event organizer and musician Andrew Bean was pleased with how the event went. “The logistics of the event went off without a hitch, but we had poor advertising and promotion due to a small time frame. We will do a much better job of that for our next showcase in February.”
Students looking to join WCPR can attend meetings Wednesday nights at 9:30 in the basement of Jacobus Hall, starting next semester.
