Fall essentials: experiment and change your fashion with the season

The weather seems a bit confused lately (seriously, it’s November and I’m sweating) but that doesn’t mean your wardrobe has to be! Not sure what to wear in the colder months? I’ve got you covered with my Fall 2015 essentials.

Let’s just say it: plaid. Plaid is never not a fall essential. Flannel and pumpkin spice lattes are the very definition of fall, and this year is no exception. Of course, the plaid button-down is always a welcome fallback, but this year I’m especially loving plaid skirts and dresses. Gap and Abercrombie have some cute miniskirts, and I’ve been dying to get my hands on a plaid shift dress. Plaid is in no way a gendered trend though; flannel will always be in for the guys and plaid scarves go either way too!

I’ve already given the spotlight to turtlenecks in their own article, but I can’t overstate how great they are. I mean, warm and stylish—who knew function and fashion were working together now? For guys, a turtlenecked sweater looks great under a leather motorcycle or bomber jacket. For the ladies, don’t be afraid to try big, chunky cowl necks or the more modern mock-neck. Both make great layering pieces.

Right down that ally is the perfect fall sweater. Sweaters are great because they’re warm and cozy. You can wear them with nearly anything, and you can get them basic or patterned and wild. The sky’s the limit here. Looking for something casual? Try a loose brown or gray crew neck sweater with a pair of jeans and riding boots. Want something more exciting? Look for a patterned or textured sweater in bold colors, pair it over a slim skirt and add tights and heels or boots.

You know what I just can’t get enough of this season? Vests. I often find myself wanting something to throw over a plain sweater or turtleneck that will add texture without hiding what’s underneath. The puffer vest is definitely a tried and true way to go: the 11th Commandment states, “Thou shalt commit no fashion faux pas in thine J. Crew Excursion vest.” But there are dressier ways to go, too. Fur vests are very hot right now, especially faux shearling, and the green utility vest hasn’t quit yet either. Currently I’m lusting after the J. Crew fleece vest in golden hickory.

I just can’t talk about fall without talking about shoes. I mean, what’s better than a cute boot? More cute boots? Over-the-knee boots have been becoming more popular the last few seasons, and my Sam Edelman Pierce booties will always be my favorite, but lately riding boots seem to be giving way to midi boots. Not quite knee-high and not quite ankle, I would definitely invest in a nice pair of black Chelsea boots as a classic wardrobe staple. For the guys looking to dress up their look, try a low leather boot in brown or black. I also like the loafer revival for both genders. This season I’ve been wearing my silver Coach loafers nearly every day (hint: I got them on sale at Marshalls!).

Okay, here’s my guilty pleasure shoe for the approaching cold months: Furry Bearpaws. Yes, the Snooki shoe. I know—how could I possibly be telling you it’s a good idea to dress like the Jersey Shore munchkin? First off, fur is totally in right now. Furry shoes are a great way to add texture to an outfit, so not only are you on trend, but you’ll be super warm, too! I never wanted to get into Uggs since everyone and their grandmother has a pair, but there’s no denying how functional they are for winter; so I love a good Uggs alternative. Bearpaw and Koolaburra are my favorites and I’m all about the furry Bearpaw Boetis right now.

Finally, you can’t have the perfect fall look without the perfect cold accessories. From jackets to hats, sometimes the outerwear makes the outfit. A classic essential for girls or guys would be a dark, solid color wool peacoat. This season, try something a little more daring like a patterned coat or big furry hat. Fall is the best time to experiment in rich colors and bold patterns.
