Komegashi Too

We return to Jersey City yet again. My friends and I decided to stray from Orale’s Pork-Belly infused creations and return to our comfort zone: Asian Cuisine. This week we went to Newport and stumbled onto Komegashi Too, a classy Japanese restaurant on the waterfront.

My first impression is that the owners did a great job with the ambiance. Most of the dining room is situated around a wall-to-wall window that faces the Freedom Tower. Like I said, this place is classy – the trendy furniture and the gorgeous view make it an ideal location for dates or a dinner spot to impress your parents. As for food, like most Japanese restaurants, I feel that Komegashi Too was too frugal on serving size. I certainly don’t speak for the average American when I say that I can eat fifty pieces of sushi in one sitting. Do I expect to receive fifty pieces of sushi? No. But it would be amazing if I could order a $15 dish of sushi and receive more than six to eight pieces.

This faux pas started with the appetizers. We ordered the Gyoza ($7) and the Tatsuta Age (Chicken Wings – $7) and they handed us about four pieces of each. Next came our entree orders. We ordered the signature dish, the Godzilla Roll ($12) and the Katsu-Don ($12.50). The Godzilla Roll came in a set of six, but compensated for the lack of pieces with its size. Those Godzilla Rolls were huge. Thankfully, they gave us a large amount of rice and chicken cutlets for the Katsu-Don and the three of us were able to fill our bellies with that dish.

The redeeming menu item was the Lady M Crepe Cakes. These desserts, offered “exclusively” from Lady M Confections in Manhattan, are sometimes carried by Asian restaurants. Thankfully, Komegashi was offering them and the three of us were able to enjoy layers of crepe and green tea or strawberry filling stacked into a cake form. It’s ten dollars per slice, and despite the steep price, they sell out fast.

Overall, I find that Komegashi’s best features are its ambiance and dessert options. Don’t expect large and generous fillings, and make sure you grab dessert! My recommendation is to eat dinner elsewhere and to swing by afterwards to grab a slice of Crepe Cake.
