Earth Week

Monday April 21:

The official Re-launch of the Green Team

Hosted at 12:00 p.m. in EAS 229A, the Stevens Green Team announced its Official Re-launch, marking the start of Stevens Institute of Technology’s Earth Week with this meeting.

During the meeting, numerous amounts of Faculty and Administration, along with students, teamed up discussing ideas to implement a “Green Campus Model.” Of the things discussed, talk of projects such as the Tech Garden, Greening of the Delta Phi Epsilon House, and Earth Week itself took place, along with the talk of initiatives on campus such as improving the recycling program around campus.

With the conclusion of this event at 1:00 p.m., Earth Week had officially begun.

ESW Design Challenge-Build

Starting at 9:00 p.m. at night in BC 219, the Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) hosted a competition which challenged those in attendance to think a little greener.

Students were requested to form into groups of two to four, and were each provided a kit of materials (each kit was a SolarDrive II model kit from Sunwind Solar Industries) which contained a variety of materials to build a vehicle of sorts.

Students were encouraged to build such a vehicle which could compete against other students in a series of challenges Thursday night. These challenges included a drag race, tug-of-war, and a ramp climb.

Tuesday April 22:

Earth Day Celebration

Students were welcomed to celebrate the annual event, Earth Day, on Davis Lawn at around noon.

Hosted by the Stevens Environmental Club, SAVE, there were games and activities set out for students. RedShift; Stevens Institute of Technology’s Creative Magazine club set a large poster on the grass and offered up recycled magazines for students to decorate however they wanted as it pertained to Earth Day. Students were encouraged to cut out pictures they liked from the magazine and paste those pictures on the poster.

Of course, the largest attraction was the Taco Truck, which gathered a very long line of students. The Taco Truck, fully paid for in advance, was handing out free Tacos to anyone who showed up. They had chicken, pork, and mushroom tacos for everyone to enjoy, whether they were celebrating Earth Day or not.

Wednesday April 23:

Farmer’s Market

The Farmer’s Market event was held in the middle of Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. on Davis Lawn, the perfect time and place for students to come over for some fresh grilled cheese sandwiches made by Stevens’ Feel Good World club. Meanwhile, vendors displayed their wares for all campus students. All of the proceeds went to a good cause and students were also encouraged to discuss with people from the local Sierra Club, a grass-roots environmental organization committed to pursuing environmental goals related to land use and development, pollution, energy, recycling, and endangered species and habitat protection; especially around the New York City area.

At 3:00 p.m. when the Farmer’s Market event closed, students were invited to attend a lecture at 3:00 p.m. in Babbio 122 from Dan Fagin, a journalist who specializes in environmental health issues.  Students who came to Wednesday’s event had a blast and were given the opportunity to relax and enjoy the weather outside.

Thursday April 24:

ESW Discussion

The Stevens chapter of Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) met up today from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Fielding Room (3rd floor of the Howe Center) to hold a discussion regarding the ideals of Earth Day and what we, as students, can do to advance the purposes of Earth Day and make every day Earth Day. The discussion panel was led by Dr. Russell and was co-sponsored by the Stevens Green Team, SAVE, ESW, and the Program in Science and Technology Studies. Students that attended this discussion learned more about what they can do to help the environment and were given plentiful advice from the four experts that attended the discussion; in which each expert spent five minutes giving their perspective on what students can do to help the environment.

Another event that happened today was a continuation of the ESW Design Challenge from Monday. All students were invited to come to this event from 9:00 to 10:00 p.m. in BC 219, including those who didn’t go to last Monday’s event.

Aside from these events that have been held during Earth Week, there is a pre SUMAC show event from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Jacobus on Friday, April 24. SUMAC, the Stevens Underground Music Awareness Club will be hanging out with SAVE and all students are invited to come by for duck giveaways and more grilled cheese served by Feel Good World (for anyone who didn’t get the grilled cheese last Wednesday).

On Saturday, there will be a Hoboken community garden clean-up. For anyone that wants to lend a helping hand and do some service, students can meet at the Howe Center at 10 a.m. in clothes that can get dirty for this opportunity.
