AED enlightens future medical field participants

In a school where the majority of students major in engineering, sometimes it can get difficult to receive guidance when one is pursuing another career. For this exact reason, Alpha Epsilon Delta held a Health Professions Workshop on Wednesday, April 16 at Carnegie. “The purpose of this session is to provide you guys with information ‘we wish we knew when we were applying,’” says Caitlin Kutlig, the president of AED. There are many possible career options in the field of medicine besides being an MD doctor. Examples include an osteopathic doctor, a genetic counselor, a physical therapist, a pharmacist, or a dentist.

Members of AED created a panel representing each of the professions mentioned above. Each person explained why they chose the career path they chose, what their career entails, and how to apply. Caitlin Cutlig dispelled misconceptions that people have of pharmacists counting pills while Mathew Michael dispelled myths about doctors we find in shows such as House or Grey’s Anatomy. Many students were interested in the career choice of genetic counseling since it is currently a very small program that most people don’t know much about.

AED provided pizza and drinks while SHPC provided Rita’s mango water ice. The panel was very enthusiastic and supportive in providing their contact information and any type of support possible to guide future applicants. “This event was very informative and helpful,” said Kathleen Nevola, a sophomore Chemical Biology major interested in pursuing a career in research. “I learned a lot from this panel,” continued Mathew Hall, another sophomore Chemical Biology major interested in practicing medicine as a physician. The panel succeeded in bringing together a group of students who are interested in different health professions, and in need of guidance. With support such as this, fewer students will be in the dark about their dreams and how to get there.
